WMWifiRouter has the ability to feed your devices internet connection to a hardware access point. It is a bit tricky to set up, and it does not work with all routers. The procedure is as follows:
- Make sure WMWifiRouter is not running
- Make sure your Access Point is set up normally
- On your mobile device, go to Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Wifi
- Make sure the box at the bottom of the screen is set to connect to Access Points only. If it is already set to that, switch it to another value, close the screen, open the same screen again, and set it back to Access Points only
- Make sure your Access Point is listed and configured correctly in this screen.
- Turn off wifi if it's on, and wait at least 10 seconds
- Turn on wifi
- Verify your mobile device connects to your Access Point correctly and automatically, now that you have turned on wifi.
- Turn off wifi again
Once you have done the above, that should mean your mobile device itself is set up correctly.
- Start WMWifiRouter
- WMWifiRouter 1.11 and older
- Make sure Options -> Configuration -> Force Ad-Hoc is turned off
- Click Connect and see if WMWifiRouter now connects to your Access Point
- WMWifiRouter 1.20 and newer
- Go to Options -> Configuration -> Wifi network and set the management mode and connection mode both to None (Advanced)
- Click Connect -> Cellular to Wifi and see if WMWifiRouter now connects to your Access Point
- Disconnect and close WMWifiRouter.
If this now works correctly, we're almost done. Now we have to make sure your Access Point itself is set up correctly, and make sure the other devices connected to it can use the internet feed provided by WMWifiRouter.
- Go into your Access Point configuration, which is usually a web page.
- Turn off the DHCP server feature. Consult the documentation of your Access Point to find out exactly how to do this.
- Optionally, on all devices already connected to this Access Point, issue a DHCP release, giving up their automatically configured IP address.
- Start WMWifiRouter
- Connect, it should connect to your Access Point
- On all other devices already connected to this Access Point, issue a DHCP renew, making them request a new IP address.
What happens now, is that the other device connected to the Access Point will request an IP address and related configuration options through DHCP. Normally, the Access Point would respond to this request, but you have turned this off. Now WMWifiRouter will respond to this request, and let the other devices on the Access Point route through the device running WMWifiRouter instead.
