KB0809023: Issues connecting with Microsoft Windows XP and Vista (WMWifiRouter 1.20+)

This article is relevant to WMWifiRouter version 1.20 and newer.

This article is a your main point of entry for issues related specifically to connecting XP or Vista to WMWifiRouter 1.20 and newer.

Try first

Make sure you have soft-reset your mobile device and your computer to see if this solved this problem. Also when having troubles, it is a good idea to turn off WEP, as the encryption may cause additional issues. It is easiest to first troubleshoot with encryption off, and when you get to work, turn it back on.

No connection or frequent drops

The first thing you should try is the following:

Changing your wifi power mode

On your mobile device, go to Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Wireless LAN . In this screen, go to the Power Mode tab and select Best Performance . This can also be done from WMWifiRouter itself, by going to Options -> Tools -> Wifi -> Power Mode , however this does not work on all devices.

You should try this before anything else, as it often fixes issues and takes a short time to do. Also note that this setting tends to reset itself once in a while.

Issue with Vista device only

If you are having connection issues with Vista, but have noticed it works fine with XP the most likely culprit is the proxy setup on your mobile device. This setting usually does not affect the connection with an XP machine, though it is not impossible.

Changing your proxy setup

On your mobile device, go to Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Connections . Under My Work Network , tap Set up my proxy server or Edit my proxy settings . Make sure the This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet is not checked.

It is advised to soft-reset your mobile device after changing this setting.

'Local connection' or 'limited connectivity' warnings with Vista

If you are having trouble connecting to the WMWifiRouter network, or often get only a 'local' connection or 'limited connectivity' warnings, you may be suffering from a Vista specific DHCP issue.

Please see this Micorosft Help and Support article for more information:

Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

Further connection issues

If none of the above solutions help, you should try the following knowledgebase articles, in the order listed here:

KB0802015: Computer will not connect to WMWifiRouter

KB0803017: Computer is connected to WMWifiRouter but routing does not work

KB0807021: Resetting your Windows XP or Vista TCP/IP stack

Frequent connection drops

If you are experiencing frequent and persistent connection drops, and the wifi power mode setting did not fix this, you may need to disable a hidden setting on your mobile device called GPRS Auto Attach.

This can be done using a configuration tool like Julian Schapman's Advanced Configuration Tool (free). If you are knowledgable about the registry you can change this setting by changing (or creating) the following registry entry on your device:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\PhoneExtendFunction\NoGRPSAutoAttach , which is a DWORD value and should be set to 1 .

You will need to soft-reset your mobile device after changing this setting.

You will be able to change this setting inside WMWifiRouter itself in a soon to be released update.
